At least 110 people have been killed in a series of explosions at an ammunition factory in southern Yemen.

Many others were injured in the blast on Monday and officials say more bodies are expected to be recovered.

The explosions in Jaar happened after local people broke in to steal ammunition a day after clashes in the town between Islamist militants and government forces, the BBC reports.

It is not clear what caused the explosions which could be heard 15km away.

Yemen has been rocked by weeks of protests demanding that President Ali Abdullah Saleh step down.
