Woman jailed 20 days over public kiss

A court in Bahrain has imprisoned a woman for 20 days for kissing a man in public and then arguing with police trying to arrest her.

The man she was kissing is also being tried.

The court heard the couple, both from Bahrain, were spotted kissing inside a car by police.

When the police said they wanted to arrest them for indecent behaviour, the woman is reported to have shouted at them, saying it was none of their business.

The court found her guilty of public indecency and insulting a police officer.

Compared to other Persian Gulf states, Bahrain is relatively liberal, but Islamists do carry considerable influence and demand stronger action against behaviour that they believe seriously transgresses Islamic codes of conduct, the BBC reports.
