Thousands of people turned out in Sydney on Saturday to demonstrate over a proposed carbon tax, with rallies by both supporters and opponents.
About 2500 people gathered at an inner city park in favour of adopting the carbon tax as a way to tackle climate change.
The ABC reports that a few kilometres away a larger crowd of about 4000 people chanted slogans in opposition.
Figures have been released showing a carbon tax could cost average households almost $A900 a year.
Climate Change Minister Greg Combet says concerns are premature as the tax amount is not set in stone and a compensation package to households has not been worked out yet.
