Safety bonuses paid by Gulf drilling company

American oil and gas drilling contractor Transocean has paid its top executives bonuses for achieving what it describes as the best year in safety in its history.

Transocean was operating the Deepwater Horizon rig for BP when it a blow-out occurred after a fire in April last year. Eleven men were killed and millions of barrels of oil leaked into the Gulf of Mexico.

It was the biggest oil spill in American history and took until July to be sealed.
