Police in Yemen fire at protesters

7:32 am on 4 April 2011

Police in Yemen have fired live bullets and teargas to disperse anti-government protesters in the southern city of Taiz.

The protesters were demanding that President Ali Abdullah Saleh steps down immediately.

He has warned that without him the country would fall into the hands of al Qaeda.

On Saturday, the Common Forum opposition coalition called on the president to hand over power to his deputy, Vice-President Abdu Rabu Hadi.

But on Sunday, the president said any transition would have to be made "through constitutional ways".

After the protests began in February, Mr Saleh announced he would not seek another term in office.
