Quake hits Mexico, no reports of damage

The quake was centred 118 km from Tuxtla Gutierrez, the capital of Chiapas state, the US Geological Survey said.The epicenter was far below the surface at a depth of 167 km.

The tremor was felt in some parts of Mexico City, about 590km away, prompting the evacuation of schools, hotels and office buildings.

But the mayor said there had not been any word of damage in the country's capital, Reuters reports.

According to the Mexican seismological service, the quake was the sixth in the country with a magnitude of 6 or above in just over a year.
