Work on Shanghai Disneyland begins

Work has begun in Shanghai on the first Disneyland amusement park in mainland China, after 10 years of negotiations.

It's likely to cost about $US3.7 billion and is expected to take five years to build.

Walt Disney chief executive Bob Iger and Shanghai Communist Party Secretary Yu Zhengsheng led a ground breaking ceremony featuring Mickey and Minnie Mouse in traditional Chinese dress.

The Shanghai city government has a majority interest in the project, with Disney holding 43%.

The BBC reports the park will be Disney's fourth outside the United States. Others are in Paris, Tokyo and Hong Kong.

Disneyland in Hong Kong opened in 2005, but is still losing money. More than 40% of its visitors are from mainland China.
