Tokyo to bid for 2020 Olympics

10:43 am on 11 April 2011

Tokyo intends to bid for the 2020 Olympics.

Tokyo governor Shintaro Ishihara says the event will be part of Japan's recovery from the earthquake and tsunami on 11 March which killed 13,000 people. Another 15,000 are unaccounted for.

Mr Ishihara, 78, won a fourth term as governor in local elections at the weekend. He is known for provocative nationalistic remarks.

In 2009, Tokyo lost to Rio de Janeiro in the race to host the 2016 Olympics.

The BBC reports Mr Ishihara was criticised for spending about 15 billion yen ($US176 million) on the bid.

Candidates for 2020 must submit their bids to the International Olympic Committee by 1 September this year.

The host city will be chosen in Buenos Aires in September 2013.

Berlin, Busan, Cape Town, Doha, Rome and Istanbul are among the cities to have signalled an interest in bidding to stage the 2020 event.

Tokyo previously hosted the Olympics in 1964.
