Car bombs kill nine in Baghdad

10:11 pm on 18 April 2011

Two suicide car bombs have exploded in the Iraqi capital, killing at least nine people and wounding five.

A security official says the cars exploded close to the heavily fortified Green Zone in Baghdad on Monday.

The bombers struck during the morning rush hour as vehicles were queuing to get into the zone from the west.

The BBC reports it is thought they may have been targeting the convoys of military and government officials on their way to work.

Some Iraqi Army soldiers are reported to be among the casualties.

These are the first such suicide bombings in Baghdad this year and come as preparations are being made for holding an Arab summit in the international zone in May.

However, it is expected the meeting will be postponed due to the political turmoil in the Arab world.
