More protests in Syria

There were fresh anti-government protests in Syria on Monday, a day after 11 people were killed by security forces.

Thousands of people have reportedly occupied the centre of the third largest city, Homs, 160km north of Damascus.

Video footage on the internet appears to show them sitting on the ground in the main square.

There were funerals on Monday for some of the eight people killed there on Sunday.

President Bashar al-Assad promised in Saturday to lift an emergency law that has been in force since 1963.

The protesters are also demanding the release of political prisoners and an end to the ruling Baath party's grip on the state and society as stipulated by Syria's constitution.
