Parole refused for Biggs

The best-known member of the gang that pulled off the Great Train Robbery in Britain, has been refused parole.

In 1963, 15 men raided a London - Glasgow mail train and escaped with 2.6 million pounds in used bank notes.

The train driver was beaten with an iron bar. He never returned to work and died seven years later without making a full recovery.

Justice Secretary Jack Straw said on Wednesday that Ronnie Biggs - who spent decades in Brazil after escaping from prison in 1965 - was wholly unrepentant and must stay in jail.

Biggs is now 79 and seriously ill and the Parole Board had recommended his release. He returned to Britain in 2001 to resume serving a 30-year sentence.
