Tax returns show US President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama reported their income last year fell to $US1.8 million.
Their income dropped from $US5.5 million in 2009 and from $US2.6 million in 2008, a decline attributed to slower book sales.
Mr Obama's salary as president was $US395,000.
The BBC reports the couple paid more than $US500,000 in federal and state taxes and donated a total of $US245,000 to three dozen charities.
Their tax returns were released by the White House on Monday.
The couple pay taxes in the state of Illinois, where they own a home and lived before moving to Washington in January 2009.
The median household income in the United States is $US52,049.
