US, China to hold talks on human rights issues

8:32 pm on 22 April 2011

The State Department says the United States and China will hold talks on human rights next week and include discussions on detentions, arrests and freedom of religion.

It says discussions will also include the recent negative trend of forced disappearances, labour rights and minority rights.

China has said it was willing to discuss its differences on human rights with the US after rejecting a critical official report from Washington as interference in its internal affairs, Reuters reports.

The State Department says Assistant Secretary for Democracy, Human Rights and Labor Michael Posner will lead the delegation to the talks in Beijing on 27-28 April.
