United States military personnel are joining Japanese counterparts in the search for thousands of people believed to have perished in an earthquake and tsunami.

About 28,000 people are listed as dead or missing following the disaster on 11 March which devastated much of northeast Japan.

Officials believe many of the victims have been washed out to sea, CNN reports.

Both Japanese and US robots are being used underwater to search through debris in places humans can't go.

There has been a mass call from victims asking the government to do more to try to find some sort of sign of their loved-ones so they can be given a proper burial.
