More border gunfire exchanged

Troops from Thailand and Cambodia have again exchanged gunfire on their border, after a lull in the fighting that has killed at least 12 people over the past four days.

Gunfire and explosions have been heard near two disputed 12th-century Hindu temples that have been the scene of sporadic grenade and artillery bombardments since Friday.

This is the bloodiest border conflict between the neighbours in nearly two decades.

The Ta Moan and Ta Krabey Hindu temples are in a jungle area claimed by both sides. The disputed Preah Vihear temple, 200 kilometres to the west, was the scene of deadly clashes in February.

The BBC reports that parts of the Thai-Cambodian border have never been formally demarcated. An international court awarded the Preah Vihear temple to Cambodia in 1962 but both sides claim ownership of the surrounding area.
