Fatal capsize in Congo

11:01 am on 26 April 2011

The Red Cross says at least 38 people died in the Democratic Republic of Congo when a boat they were travelling in capsized.

The boat was ferrying goods and people across Lake Kivu when it tipped over and sank in poor weather at 4am on Monday. It was reportedly carrying more than 100 people.

A rescue team recovered 38 bodies and 12 survivors from the lake.

Roads are virtually non-existent in Congo. Accidents are common due to poor maintenance and overloading.
