Ban on school groups at Saddam's grave

5:39 am on 8 July 2009

The Iraqi government has banned all organised visits by schoolchildren to the grave of the former leader, Saddam Hussein.

The BBC report some schools have taken pupils to visit the site, near Tikrit, north of Baghdad.

A video has shown a group of school girls singing his praises.

Monday's order from the cabinet was accompanied by others that called for some signs and monuments dating back to before Saddam was overthrown in 2003, to be dismantled because they "glorified the past regime".

Saddam was executed in December 2006.
