Asylum-seekers end rooftop protest

9:11 am on 1 May 2011

A rooftop protest at an immigration detention centre in Sydney has ended after 11 days.

The protest started when 100 detainees set fire to furniture and confronted guards.

Nine buildings destroyed by fire, with 22 people now in Silverwater jail awaiting questioning over their part in the disturbance.

Three men carried on the protest against their failed applications for asylum.

One was coaxed down from the roof of a building at the centre on Friday and the other two came down of their own accord on Saturday night, the ABC reports

The Department of Immigration says they will undergo a medical assessment and be interviewed by police.
