Muslim Brotherhood sets up new party

1:23 pm on 1 May 2011

The previously-banned Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt says it will contest up to half the seats in parliament in elections scheduled for September.

Candidates will run under the banner of the Freedom and Justice Party.

The head of the new party, Mohammed al-Mursi, says it will be a civil, not a theocratic, organisation.

The Muslim Brotherhood ran candidates as independents in previous elections, to circumvent a ban on the group, the BBC reports.
