Crowds chanting support for Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi have gathered in Tripoli, for the funeral of his son who was killed in a NATO airstrike on Saturday.

About 2000 people carrying flags and pictures of Colonel Gaddafi turned out for the ceremony.

They pumped their fists in the air and vowed to avenge the death of Saif al-Arab.

Colonel Gaddafi did not appear to be at the funeral but Saif al-Islam, the most prominent of his seven sons, attended along with his elder half-brother Mohammed.

Saif al-Arab's coffin was carried through the crowds to a grave in the Hani cemetery in the capital.

Saif al-Arab, 29, had no children, but the government says three of his nieces and nephews, all of them under three years old, were killed.
