Australian town bans bottled water

7:43 pm on 11 July 2009

The town of Bundanoon in New South Wales has voted overwhelmingly in favour of a ban on bottled water.

The ABC reports more than 350 people turned out at a public meeting at the town hall on Wednesday night to vote on the motion.

Only one resident voted against the proposal, along with a representative from the bottled water industry.

The sale of pre-packaged bottled water will be banned in shops in favour of reusable plastic bottles that can be filled up for free.

The voluntary ban is expected to be in full force by the end of this year.

Earlier, all NSW government departments and agencies were ordered to stop buying bottled water and use tap water instead.

Premier Nathan Rees says he believes the Government should lead by example.
