10:09 pm on 9 July 2009

At least 65 people have died in the western Indian state of Gujarat after drinking bootleg liquor, with at least 23 more people seriously ill.

The victims, mostly labourers, started vomiting and convulsing after drinking the liquor in a slum in the city of Ahmedabad at the weekend.

The city's police chief says about 32 people have been arrested in connection with brewing and supplying the liquor.

At least 180 people died in the southern states of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu in May last year, in India's worst bootleg liquor tragedy.
