Officials in Tonga have reportedly confirmed that former Thai prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra paid a visit there this week.

Thaksin was also reported to be in Fiji earlier this week, amid speculation that he is seeking safety in a country with no extradition treaty with Thailand.

Thaksin, whose Thai passport has been cancelled, is wanted in Bangkok on corruption charges.

The ABC says he reportedly spent a day in Suva to meet interim prime minister, Commodore Frank Bainimarama.
