Nine killed on roads in Tasmania in one day

10:37 am on 10 July 2009

Tasmania had its worst single day of road fatalities in more than 20 years on Thursday: nine people are dead.

Six people died in two separate head-on crashes within three hours of each other on Thursday morning.

Three people, including a baby, were killed in a third incident at about 5.30pm (AEST).

The deaths bring the state road toll to 48 this year. At the same time last year it was 28, and 40 for the whole year.

Six people died in a single day on Tasmanian roads in January 1989 when six youths were killed in a car that collided with a log truck.
