The Finance Sector Union in Australia says up to 10,000 jobs have been lost in the sector since the beginning of the global economic downturn.

The ABC reports a plan by the ANZ Bank to consolidate some of its centres, involving about 250 positions across Australia, is the latest in a series of recent job cuts.

The union says the Government should not tolerate any more job losses.

It says big banks should not be shedding jobs because the federal government has given them guarantees.
