10:25 pm on 5 May 2011

At least 21 policemen have been killed in a suicide bomb attack on a police station in the city of Hilla south of Baghdad.

The bomber rammed a car packed with explosives into the building in Iraq's deadliest attack in a month, AFP reports.

The explosion also wounded at least 75 officers and badly damaged the police station as well as several nearby houses and shops.

The attack was the deadliest to hit Iraq since 29 March, when a band of al-Qaeda gunmen and suicide bombers managed to storm a provincial council building in the central city of Tikrit killing 58 people.
