Cannes Film Festival begins

4:06 pm on 13 May 2011

The 64th Cannes Film Festival is officially underway on the French Riviera.

It opened with a screening of Midnight in Paris, a romantic comedy from American director Woody Allen.

Allen, 75, was joined by cast members Adrien Brody, Owen Wilson and Michael Sheen on the red carpet. The film also features French first lady Carla Bruni.

Italian director Bernardo Bertolucci, 71, - who made Last Tango in Paris and The Last Emperor - received an honorary Palme d'Or.

''The surprise makes this even more important,'' he said before declaring the festival officially open.

Actors Jude Law and Uma Thurman are among the members of this year's international jury, chaired by Robert De Niro.

The BBC reports Dustin Hoffman, Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie were among the stars attending the festival, which runs until 22 May.

Other celebrities included pop star Lady Gaga.
