Thousands of people have again been taking part in anti-government protests across Syria following Friday prayers.
Three people were reportedly killed when security forces opened fire to break up a demonstration in the central city of Homs.
There were also reports of gunfire in the southern city of Deraa.
Earlier, an opposition leader said President Bashar al-Assad had promised that troops would not fire on protesters.
The BBC reports Homs has been the scene of a military operation since Monday. Areas have been shelled by tanks and troops have been conducting house-to-house searches.
Reports from Syria are hard to verify independently, as foreign journalists are not allowed into the country.
