Ousted president's supporters shut down highways

Supporters of the ousted Honduran president Manuel Zelaya have shut down highways in protests throughout the central American country.

Hundreds of followers are demanding his reinstatement before weekend mediation talks.

The demonstrations are taking place as Costa Rican president Oscar Arias prepares to host talks with the rival sides in the political crisis triggered by last month's coup.

The protesters, watched by armed soldiers and riot police, shut off the northern and southern entrances to the capital Tegucigalpa for several hours, backing up trucks and other vehicles for kilometres.

They say they intend to repeat the protests.
