The main opposition party in South Africa has made gains in local government elections that could indicate frustration with the ruling African National Congress.

Preliminary results show the ANC, which received almost 68% of the vote in the last municipal race five years ago, was ahead with 64%.

The Democratic Alliance had almost 22% of the vote, compared with 14% last time.

The Alliance gained ground in major cities, including the biggest, Johannesburg.
