A man described as the most notorious criminal in Papua New Guinea has been jailed for 30 years for his role in the country's biggest bank robbery.

In 2008, William Kapris and his accomplices kidnapped the manager of the Madang branch of the Bank South Pacific and held his family hostage.

Then, dressed as policemen, they went to the bank and took $US1 million.

In sentencing Kapris, the judge said only a fraction of the money had been recovered.

The National newspaper reports that 11 others were given prison sentences of between eight and 15 years.

The ABC reports Kapris is already serving time for attempted murder, two jailbreaks and the robbery of a gold refinery.

He is also facing charges over a second bank robbery.
