Merkel backs Germany's nuclear exit within a decade

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has backed proposals to shut down all of the country's 17 nuclear power plants within about a decade.

She has reversed an earlier decision to extend the life span of Germany's nuclear plants after the massive earthquake and tsunami of 11 March hit Japanese reactors, causing an environmental disaster.

Her cabinet plans to make a decision on 6 June.

Chancellor Merkel imposed a three-month moratorium on operation of the oldest seven of Germany's nuclear plants, ordered safety checks on all reactors and asked a commission to make recommendations for the industry.

Her decision last year to extend the life of the plants was a major factor in her party losing power after 60 years in a prosperous conservative state in March.
