'That hat' sells online for thousands

12:31 pm on 23 May 2011

The hat worn by Princess Beatrice at last month's royal wedding has sold for £81,100 on an internet auction.

The princess - eldest daughter of Prince Andrew - provided one of the most memorable moments of the wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton when she appeared wearing the eccentric headpiece.

Some royal watchers likened the headwear to a giant pretzel.

The hat inspired its own Facebook page which had a following of more than 143,000 people.

The listing on auction site eBay described the hat as "truly individual, fun but elegant", going on to say that the statement piece was "gravity-defying."

Proceeds from the sale of the hat, designed by Irish milliner Philip Treacy, will be split between two charities: the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF) and British charity Children in Crisis.

The online auction site has not revealed the winning bidder's identity.
