Nazi-saluting gnome not deemed illegal

Officials in Germany say displaying a garden gnome in a Nuremberg art gallery with its right hand raised in a Hitler salute is not illegal.

Prosecutors in the Bavarian city have ruled that the gnome is ridiculing the Nazis rather than promoting a return of the Third Reich.

The gnome's creator, artist Ottmar Hoerl, says it is pretty clear garden gnomes are silly and that they do silly things.

Hitler salutes and Nazi symbols have been illegal in Germany since the end of the Second World War, but officials say they are allowed if used clearly to counter national socialist ideology.
