US offers support to NATO bid by Georgia

United States Vice-President Joe Biden has offered full support to Georgia in its bid to join the NATO military alliance.

Earlier, Russia said it would take concrete steps to stop the country re-arming.

Mr Biden has allayed fears the US might sideline Georgia in favour of improved ties with Russia.

He told the Georgian parliament on Thursday that Washington still sees the breakaway regions of Abkhazia and South Ossetia as part of Georgia.

At the same time, he said Georgia needs to do much more to deepen democracy.
