Son of bin Laden may be dead - US official

Updated at 4:09 pm on 24 July 2009

A United States intelligence official says one of Osama Bin Laden's sons is believed to have been killed by an American missile attack in Pakistan earlier this year.

Saad Bin Laden - who is in his late 20s - was not targeted, but reports say he was caught in the strike.

Citing US intelligence sources, National Public Radio reported in the United States on Thursday that it was unknown whether Sa'ad bin Laden was anywhere near his father when he died.

A US intelligence official said in January that the younger bin Laden had been freed from custody in Iran and had probably gone to Pakistan.

The US believes Osama bin Laden is hiding in Pakistan, but the hunt for him went cold several years ago. The last videotape of him was released was two years ago.
