NATO steps up military action in Libya

5:20 pm on 4 June 2011

NATO has stepped up its military action against Muammar Gaddafi's forces in Libya, using attack helicopters for the first time.

The alliance says the use of helicopters provides it with additional flexibility to track and engage forces loyal to Colonel Gaddafi, to prevent them targeting civilians.

British Apache helicopters attacked and destroyed two military installations, a radar site and an armed checkpoint near Brega.

The BBC reports that French Gazelle helicopters also took part in simultaneous attacks on different targets in Libya for the first time.

NATO intervened in Libya after the UN passed a resolution for the protection of civilians, amid a two-month revolt inspired by other uprisings in the Arab world.
