Anti-corruption officers in Nigeria have arrested prominent politician Dimeji Bankole on suspicion of fraud.

There have been reports the outgoing speaker of parliament was planning to leave Nigeria.

President Goodluck Jonathan was sworn into office a week ago promising to tackle Nigeria's endemic corruption.

For weeks newspapers have speculated as to when Mr Bankole would be detained. After a four-hour stand-off at his home in the capital Abujua, he was taken into custody, the BBC reports.

A statement from anti-corruption body, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, said Mr Bankole is wanted for questioning over a series of allegations.

They include the misappropriation of $US60 million and the taking out of a US$65 million personal bank loan using parliament accounts as collateral.

Mr Bankole's term of office expired on Friday - a new parliament is due to be sworn in on Monday. He lost his seat in elections in April.
