Western countries have been told to do more to cut down on greenhouse gas emissions.

A new report has found that poor and developing nations have agreed to cut pollution by greater levels than seven industrial powers combined.

The study by the Stockholm Environment Institute compared four major international assessments of emissions pledges.

It found that China, India, South Africa and Brazil have agreed to do more that the combined efforts of seven of the largest developed countries including the United States, Japan, parts of Europe and Australia, the ABC reports.

The report also found that pledges made by all nations combined will fail to prevent global temperatures rising above the 2°C target that was agreed by governments last year.
