Arrests over train crash in Croatia

5:25 pm on 28 July 2009

Police in Croatia have arrested eight people for interrogation over a train crash last week in which six people died and 55 were injured.

Investigators have been focusing on the improper use of a flame-retardant liquid on the track, which may have prevented the passenger train from braking properly.

The train derailed near the Adriatic city of Split.

Croatian state radio says those arrested include officials and employees of the state railway company and employees of a firm that sold the liquid.
