More clashes at Christmas Is detention centre

12:00 pm on 11 June 2011

The Australian federal police have been called in to restore order at the Christmas Island detention centre, where as many as 100 detainees have been involved in clashes.

Projectiles were thrown at officers and three asylum-seekers are staging a rooftop protest after an altercation among detainees.

The police were handed control of two compounds at the facility on Thursday night after some detainees were caught fashioning makeshift weapons from materials including sporting equipment and pieces of concrete.

The police say officers who were sent in to restore order found 100 detainees protesting violently, some with metal poles and concrete blocks.
