Three boats carrying nearly 700 migrants from North Africa have arrived on the island of Lampedusa in southern Italy.

Officials say two other boats, carrying an estimated 200 migrants, have been spotted heading towards the island, which is halfway between Tunisia and Sicily.

Thousands of people fleeing upheavals in North Africa have sailed to Italy in recent months, creating an immigration crisis.
