Roadside bomb kills children

5:30 am on 12 June 2011

Sixteen Afghans, most of them children, have been killed by a roadside bomb in the southern province of Khandahar.

The BBC reports the attack took place in Arghandab district, an unstable area with a strong Taliban presence.

A report from the United Nations says May was the deadliest month for civilians in the country since it began compiling statistics in 2007.

It says 368 ''conflict-related'' civilian deaths were documented in May and 593 civilian injuries.
