Civilian death toll rises in Afghanistan

6:54 am on 1 August 2009

The United Nations says the number of civilians killed in Afghanistan in the first half of this year has risen by nearly 25%, compared with the same period last year.

It says insurgents have killed almost 600 civilians, while international and Afghan forces were responsible for more than 300 deaths.

The UN also warned more civilians may be killed in the coming weeks as the Taliban fights a major offensive by US forces ahead of elections on 20 August.
