International donors led by Britain and Microsoft tycoon Bill Gates pledged $US4.3 billion on Monday to buy vaccines to protect children in poor countries against pneumonia and diarrhoea.

The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunisation said the funding should allow more than 250 million children to be vaccinated by 2015, helping to prevent more than four million premature deaths.

GAVI said the pledges surpassed the target of $US3.7 billion.

Mr Gates said his charitable foundation would add another $US1 billion over five years.

Other donors include Norway, the United States, Australia, France, Germany, and The Netherlands.

Pneumonia and diarrhoea are two of the biggest killers of children.
