Christians killed in Pakistan

5:43 am on 2 August 2009

At least six people have been killed in Pakistan in clashes between Muslims and Christians.

The disturbances began earlier in the week in Punjab, when hundreds of Muslims set fire to around 30 Christian homes, after rumours spread that they had desecrated pages from the Koran.

Fighting broke out when Christian demonstrators marched in protest on Saturday and six died.

President Asif Ali Zardari has called for restraint.

Christians account for roughly 4% of the 170 million people in Pakistan.
