10:27 pm on 7 August 2009

Three British soldiers have been killed in an explosion in southern Afghanistan.

Britain's Ministry of Defence said the soldiers from the Parachute Regiment were travelling in a vehicle in Helmand province when they were ambushed by a roadside bomb and fire from Taliban insurgents on Friday.

A fourth man was in a critical condition.

The deaths raise to the number of British troops killed in Afghanistan to 195 since the conflict there began in 2001.

Last month was the deadliest of the eight-year war for Britain, with 22 troops killed. Roadside bombs have been the main cause of deaths.

Britain has 9,000 troops operating in Afghanistan, the vast majority in Helmand, a vast province in the south where the Taliban remain strong.
