A South Korean dog meat festival has been cancelled following protests from animal rights activists.

The Korea Dog Farmers' Association had scheduled the festival to promote traditional dog meat consumption.

An adviser to the association and nutrition professor, Ann Yong-Geun, says it has received numerous phone calls complaining and few businesses were ready to rent a venue for the event.

The association had said the festival, to be held in a traditional open-air market in the city of Seongnam, south of the capital Seoul, would showcase various canine delicacies including barbecued dog, sausages and steamed paws, the AFP reports.
