Authorities have evacuated almost one million people from the south-eastern coast of China, where Typhoon Morakot is expected to make landfall.

Some 473,000 residents of Zhejiang province have been evacuated as well as 480,000 from Fujian, the Chinese Xinhua news agency reports.

More than 35,000 ships have been called in to port as the storm closes in, bringing torrential rain and heavy wind.

In Taiwan, one person was killed and at least 29 were missing after Morakot lashed the island on Saturday.
