Typhoon Morakot makes landfall in China

9:08 am on 10 August 2009

Typhoon Morakot has hit the south-east coast of China, destroying hundreds of houses and flooding farmland.

Almost one million people were evacuated ahead of the storm, which came ashore in Fujian province with winds of up to 120km per hour.

Shanghai is on "high alert" on Sunday and dozens of cargo ships have delayed or cancelled their voyages.

Morakot earlier hit Taiwan, killing at least three people and causing some of the worst flooding for 50 years.
